空心砖是目前国家建筑部门推荐的优先产品，因此其优点自然是非常多的。空心砖分为页岩空心砖、烧结空心砖、黏土空心砖等，但无论是哪种空心砖，这类装修材料最显著的特点自然是“空心”，即砖的表面有几个通到底的小孔。由于这种独特的中通造型，空心砖具有非常好的保温、隔音和降噪效果。开的孔洞非但不会使室内墙面装饰材料的墙体隔音效果变差，反而会因为空气的流动和气压而具有非常好的隔音效果。

空心砖中一般开有六个中通的孔洞，这些孔洞的增加，相应地减少了砖块的材料总量，也就减少了使用材料的总质量，使得楼房的总质量减少。由于我国人口的大幅增加，楼房也越起越高，如果在整栋高楼中使用实心砖这种装饰材料分类的话，那么楼房的总质量将会非常大，楼房的地基很难在承受如此大的重量时依旧保持原样。这样一来，整栋楼的危险系数就会大大增加。因此，目前国家首先推荐的是空心砖，而国外建筑也以使用空心砖为主。
